It focuses on a group of unlikely dancers, older students, in an attempt to understand why they are there, taking dancing classes. Through participant observation and in-depth interviews with dance instructors, dance students aged five through sixty-seven and parents of young students, it examines the experience of the dance class, why the teachers teach and why the students take lessons.

BECOMING THROUGH DANCE
This article examines an area rarely visited by sociologists, the dance studio. It
focuses on a group of unlikely dancers, older students, in an attempt to understand why
they are there, taking dancing classes. Through participant observation and in-depth
