FAMILY, KINSHIP AND THE ORIGIN
OF THE INCEST TABOO
HUMAN CONCERNS ABOUT INCEST
It was not until the 19
th
Century that more scientific efforts were made to
understand the origins of the incest taboo. This newfound interest coincided with
attempts to explain the origins of the family and society, but the concerns of these
social “scientists” represented only a new chapter in speculation about incest and
the taboo prohibiting sexual relations between the mother-son, father-daughter,
and brother-sister dyads of the nuclear family. From the Greeks and Romans
through Christendom and the early modern period in Europe can be found many
tales, myths, stories, songs, poems, and religious edicts on incest.
