The fatality data has been presented in Table 1. As the periodized count suggests, the era began
with the single most violent year ever recorded in American labor history, the year of the Great Strike of
1877 wherein an estimated one hundred individuals lost their lives. After the initial flurry of 1877,
violence appears to have abated until it re-ignited with the Haymarket bombing and other events in 1886.
Fatalities remained common to the labor movement throughout the 1890s and Progressive Era, peaking in
