Of Voters and Vadim: A Historical and Regional Perspective on Party
Accountability and Anti-System Prospects in Romania’s 2004 Elections
Frank Sellin

Overshadowing Romania’s national elections this November is the question that drives
this paper: what is the likelihood that radical nationalists, represented most visibly on the level
of political parties by the Greater Romania Party (PRM) and its leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor,
might repeat their striking second place performance of 2000, respectively nearly 20 percent of
the vote in the parliamentary elections, and 28 percent of the vote in the first round of the
presidential elections? This narrower question about prospective electoral outcomes begs
broader questions of how we might evaluate party system accountability to voters, and the extent
of popular support for antisystem alternatives in Romania.
