Emma Goldman and Ayn Rand: Ethical Egoism and Constraint
| |
| | Unformatted Document Text:
Abstract
Emma Goldman and Ayn Rand represent distinct schools of thought within left and right
American libertarianism. Their theories of ethical egoism demands unconstrained personalautonomy. Both recognize that the achievement of a mature selfhood by most individuals requiressome guidance to ensure self-actualization as well as certain constraints to minimize the excessesof freedom within civil society. They propose a social ethos that embodies the essential principlesleading to a properly construed selfhood. However, the mere existence of a social ethic iscoercive, and its precepts and conveyance are in conflict with the inviolable right of individualsovereignty. While Goldman posits a theory of an “aristocracy of spirit” who would identify andpropagate an ethos among the willing, she is unable to find a justification that is consistent withher extremely individualistic anarchism. Rand, however, holds that a social ethos is the vanguardof the self-sufficient ego.
