Contextomy: The Art of Quoting out of Context
Unformatted Document Text:  1 Both Streicher and Coughlin eventually abandoned the use of contextomized parables in favor of quotes from The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, an anti-semitic forgery allegedly documenting the late-night meetings of a secret rabbinical society bent on world domination. It seems reasonable to assume that deceptive excerpting from genuine religious texts required more work for less slander than faithful quoting from this bogus text. 2 Black essayist Shelby Steele (1990) initiated this trend when he titled his controversial critique of affirmative action “The Content of Our Character.” However, nowhere in the book does Steele assert or insinuate that King himself opposed affirmative action, instead suggesting that King failed to foresee negative consequences of the policy Steele himself alleges.
