Little Chang Big City: Asian Diaspora in American Independent Rock

I’m an alien!

That was a cry from an ephemeral Asian American band playing ‘alternative rock’ at
the Asian Pacific American Heritage Festival in New York City a decade ago. And
Deborah Wong notes it in her seminal book on ‘Asian American music(s).’ The band
members are of course not really aliens. But they must have just felt that way: “I grew
up in 5 or 6 different places in New Jersey, and being the only Asian around, I was
always subject to a lot of abuse. I can’t even think of a day that went by when someone
didn’t call me a chink or something.”(Ed Lin, from Wong 2004: 129)
