International Politics and International Relations: Two Strands of Studies Derived from the Curricular Development of International Studies in Japanese Universities

If the Japanese name of the Japan Association of
International Relations
was
translated literally, the English name should have been the Japan Association of
International Politics
. This discrepancy is presumably due to the first president,
Kamikawa’s identification of “International Politics” and “International Relations” which incurred Kawata’s criticism as just noted. Whatever caused the linguistic bifurcation in the first place, this bilingual conflation happens to embody the initial condition of the association and its contemporary form simultaneously. The Japan Association of International Relations, or the Japan Association of International Politics, which started with 35 fellows surrounding Kamikawa in 1956, now incorporates over 2000 members with various backgrounds divided into three categories, namely, theories of international politics, area studies, and the history of diplomacy and international politics.
