NON-PRESIDENTIAL NEWSPAPER ENDORSEMENTS, 2002, 2004 and 2006/ Abstract
Following the 2002, 2004, and 2006 elections the author sampled twenty
newspapers from the top-100 in circulation, tallying candidate endorsements. The
newspapers endorsed incumbents four-to-one over challengers. In two elections the
newspapers endorsed equivalent numbers of Democrats and Republicans. In 2004 a
quirk of the sample included five Democratic-leaning papers endorsing in an unusually
large number of races. The endorsed congressional candidates were more conservative
than Congress overall. The percentage of endorsed women increased steadily.
