Social Impacts of Community Wireless Networking: Articulating Technology and Politics
Unformatted Document Text:  Both of the articulations described here satisfy the desires to create something more from technology – and both are engaged with the historicity of their practices.  The contribution of CWN mobilizations on the broader scale comes out of the possibility they provide for different groups of actors to create useful connections between technology and politics, in a way that also allows them to define meaningful identities for themselves.  They also, even if unevenly, define a set of communities:  local communities, geographical communities, cultural communities, geek communities. Although all of these communities are elided together within the community wireless networking movement, separately or in addition to one another, they provide the scale and entry point for engagement with wireless technology.  The community becomes the assembly point for the movement, and for the development of a network. Thus, if CWN is successful as a “policy hack”, it is through linking together different articulations between technology and policy to connect together ways of belonging with technology, and designing technology to leverage for belonging. 22

Both of the articulations described here satisfy the desires to create something more from
technology – and both are engaged with the historicity of their practices.  The
contribution of CWN mobilizations on the broader scale comes out of the possibility they
provide for different groups of actors to create useful connections between technology
and politics, in a way that also allows them to define meaningful identities for
themselves.  They also, even if unevenly, define a set of communities:  local
communities, geographical communities, cultural communities, geek communities.
Although all of these communities are elided together within the community wireless
networking movement, separately or in addition to one another, they provide the scale
and entry point for engagement with wireless technology.  The community becomes the
assembly point for the movement, and for the development of a network.
Thus, if CWN is successful as a “policy hack”, it is through linking together different
articulations between technology and policy to connect together ways of belonging with
technology, and designing technology to leverage for belonging.
