Creating a carbon-neutral university: Group-based interaction and the formation of pro-environmental social identities
~ Two thousand scientists, in a hundred countries, engaged in the most elaborate, well organized scientific collaboration in the history of humankind, have produced long-since a consensus that we will face a string of terrible catastrophes unless we act to prepare ourselves and deal with the underlying causes of global warming ~ Al Gore
This quote by Al Gore outlines for us what can be considered one of the most important challenges facing humanity. How to act to deal with the underlying causes of global warming.
We know that global warming represents a massive threat to humankind.A genuinely human-made natural disaster, scientists predict that if we continue on our current course, human activities will severely compromise the natural processes vital to sustaining life on earth (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 2007).
These human activities include the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil needed to run our cars, factories and power plants, along with the clearing of forests which have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere and are already causing temperatures to rise.
If we don’t start fixing the problem now, the rise in temperatures will have a devastating impact on our environment and the life of humans. We’re already seeing changes. Sea levels are rising, glaciers are retreating, arctic shrinkage is occurring and patterns of agriculture have already been altered.
If the warming continues, we can expect catastrophic consequences – global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet devastating coastal areas and creating millions of environmental refugees; heat waves will be more frequent and intense; droughts and wildfires will occur more often; tropical diseases will become more prevalent and more than a million species could be driven to extinction by 2050. The economic impact of these changes is anticipated to be drastic.
If we are to solve the problem of climate change, people must change their everyday behaviour quite drastically - from consuming less meat, reducing a reliance on cars, having shorter showers, buying locally made and grown products, practically every activity we engage in contributes to the production of greenhouse gases.
Considering the number of behaviors people will need to change in order to address the problem of climate change, and the consequences of inaction,
