AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to make suggestions for the developing nations in regards to making necessary adjustments in the globalization age. We employ institutional analysis so as to cover all corners of the system-state-society triangle. We adopt “internal and external congruity of the state” metaphor while we are dealing with our case: Turkish state after 1980. Developing nations challenged by global trends, and are expected to alleviate negative externalities of the globalization. There are major developmental alternatives of neoliberal, welfare, embedded autonomy, and socialist model out there; however, we believe that institutional peculiarities of the state and society are vital, and each state should take into consideration its sui generis situation in order to design its own way. We argue that there are two main duties in front of each national government. First order is to understand what direction the global context is flowing. And second is to analyze domestic context and actors therein. After this, the thing to do is to design a homemade solution taking also into consideration what is available. Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to make suggestions for the developing nations in regards to making
necessary adjustments in the globalization age. We employ institutional analysis so as to cover
all corners of the system-state-society triangle. We adopt “internal and external congruity of the
state” metaphor while we are dealing with our case: Turkish state after 1980. Developing nations
challenged by global trends, and are expected to alleviate negative externalities of the
globalization. There are major developmental alternatives of neoliberal, welfare, embedded
autonomy, and socialist model out there; however, we believe that institutional peculiarities of
the state and society are vital, and each state should take into consideration its sui generis
situation in order to design its own way. We argue that there are two main duties in front of each
national government. First order is to understand what direction the global context is flowing.
And second is to analyze domestic context and actors therein. After this, the thing to do is to
design a homemade solution taking also into consideration what is available.
Paper prepared for presentation at the annual meeting of the International Studies
Association, at March 26-29, 2008, San Francisco, California.
