development issues. Japan’s role is unlikely to change much and the enthusiasm for revising its
constitution appears to have waned. As a result, India will have time for its power and
capabilities to grow, allowing it greater leverage to navigate the uncertain waters of Asia’s
future. Asia’s future is a question mark with many competing arguments attempting to explain
the years ahead. Hopefully, the increasing economic ties and evolving multilateral institutions in
the region will help Asia avoid the conflict forecast by many of the predictions of realism. If this
is so, India may not be forced to choose sides as many proponents of balancing desire. Yet
India’s position may provide it an important opportunity to promote regional peace and stability.
