Unformatted Document Text:  ---DRAFT COPY--      Comparing rural health and health care in Canada and the United States:  The  influence of federalism.       Joe Blankenau  Wayne State College  Wayne NE 68787  ## email not listed ##    Rural health and health care in Canada and the United States is compared by employing five conceptual lenses of federalism; the structure of federations, the sociological underpinnings of federations, political economy, political parties and constitutional reform and judicial   review (Burgess 2006).  Despite differences in their political and  health systems, the analysis shows that Canada and the United States have very similar rural health problems and similar public responses.  The evidence points to the sociological and political economy lenses as being the most instructive in understanding how federalism influences rural health in both countries. Key factors shaping health and health care in the two counties include: urban/rural cleavages, demographics, struggling rural economies, rural health economics and fiscal federalism             Paper Presented at the Western Political Science Association 2009 Annual Meeting, March 19– 21, 2009, Vancouver, BC, Canada

Rural health and health care in Canada and the United States is compared by employing
