Abstract:

This paper takes as its point of departure the contention that the study of states in International Political Economy (IPE) is impoverished by a combination of, on the one hand, the strong anti-statist tendencies that have arisen as the foundation for the study of globalisation and, on the other, the failure to engage substantially in a comparative analysis of contemporary states in a manner that reaches beyond the customary triad of advanced industrialised states. Dominant debates in IPE have featured some serious analysis of the latter cases, but have tended to ignore entirely the vast collection of states that do not fall within this category, preferring to classify them as the specialist preserve of area studies and comparative politics specialists. At the same time, state debates in IPE have tended to consider these states through the theoretical and conceptual lenses associated with the study of advanced industrialised democracies, and consequently offered only inadequate perspectives on and theorisations of their nature and evolution. This paper seeks, in this light, to set out a reformulated agenda for studying states in IPE, which is capable of accommodating analysis of the full gamut of state forms encountered across the world and offering a genuinely comparative international political economy of contemporary statehood. |
