Abstract:
|
Anthony Giddens’ Structuration Theory has sustained unprecedented popularity within and across disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Unfortunately, no systematic method has been developed for reviewing, aiding, organizing and evaluating communication scholarship informed by structuration. This paper proposes such a framework for extant and future uses of the metatheory by communication scholars. Towards this aim, the central goals and elements of structuration are reviewed. Then, an organizational and evaluative framework, informed by these central goals and elements, is developed. Finally, the proposed organizational-evaluative framework is applied to extant structurational theory and research in communication scholarship. |
