Abstract:

This study explores whether new communication technologies have revolutionized the way in which reporters contact news sources and acquire information. It uses an innovative method based on detailed testimonies of journalists who authored a sample of hundreds of news items to reconstruct the formation patterns of news both before and after the introduction of new communication technologies into the Israeli daily press. Most of the changes found are concentrated in the phase of discovering the news, while the gathering of further information shows almost no change. The dominant technology used continues to be the telephone, with the Internet playing a marginal role. The possible stabilizing forces are discussed.
