Abstract:

The present exploratory study is a first step in an attempt to integrate two theoretical traditions in the study of media and public opinion, under conditions perceived by publics as being threatening; the agenda-setting tradition and that of media system dependency theory. An experimental design is employed to explore the links between perceptions of threat, media dependency relations for achievement of goals of social and self understanding as well as social and self orientation, and public agenda. Perceived threat is manipulated through the use of newspaper content. Five hypotheses are posed linking the foregoing variables pairwise. While the results of the data analysis from this initial exploratory study did not provide the anticipated results supporting the key hypotheses, the discussion of the results and the limitations of the study is instructive in preparation of a follow-up study scheduled for the beginning of 2005.
