Abstract:
|
War poses a challenge to the application of journalists professional norm of objectivity and independence. Much of research on U.S. press coverage of oppositional voices against U.S. war policy indicates that dissent voices are limited in the absence of U.S. official oppositions. However, media balance norm and attraction to conflicts might lead the press actively to seek dissent voices. Our findings show that the New York Times maintained relatively constant level of coverage of opposition. However, dissent voices from various sources were differently framed according to their legitimacy, relevance and the need for application of balancing norm. |

| Striking a balance in public policy news Striking a balance in public policy news: Journalistic norms selections and frames of oppositional voices to U.S. government war policy Introduction War often provides an opportunity for the ‘reality check’ of assumed roles and values of journalism in a democracy. The situation in which national security is involved often constrains the applications of the journalist’s prevailing norm of objectivity. Journalists not only confront the government’s propaganda and information control but also the |
