Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: To better understand what a feminist, empowerment approach is for advocates working with survivors, a grounded theory, qualitative, semi-structured interview study was conducted of rape victim advocates (N = 25) working in rape crisis centers in a large metropolitan area. Several characteristics were described as reflecting a feminist, empowerment orientation as distinct from other treatment orientations. Although there was some overlap between advocates regardless of their treatment orientation, those endorsing a feminist, empowerment orientation specifically differed in several domains including: some of their personal characteristics, responses made to survivors they work with, perceptions of their agencies and difficulties in doing their work, perceptions of barriers survivors face to getting help, and solutions to the problem of rape.
