Gender, Race, and Class: An Intersectional Analysis of Body Image Development of Adolescent Girls

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

A significant body of research currently exists on the issue of body image among adolescents. Yet little consideration has been given to how class might intersect with race and gender in the construction of an adolescent girl’s body image. This paper aims to fill that gap by providing an intersectional analysis that takes race, class and gender into account. The paper will draw upon the methodological framework provided by Julie Bettie’s "Women Without Class" to show how class subjectivity needs to be addressed in order to provide a more accurate account of adolescent girls’ development in the United States today.
