Cognitive Development and the Stress Process: A Study of Adolescent Rule Violation

Abstract:

Prior research shows that stress and personal attributes (e.g., interpersonal dependency, empathy) affect behavioral outcomes in youth, and that such effects may differ by sex. However, the extent to which this “stress process” varies across the teenage years is less clear. Moreover, to our knowledge, the ways in which cognitive developmental factors (e.g., moral and legal reasoning) influence the stress process have not been examined previously. Thus, we use data from middle and high school students in northern New England to test whether cognitive developmental factors, stress, and personal attributes influence rule-violating behaviors uniquely for 6th and 9th grade boys and girls. To the extent that differences (or similarities) are identified, results will serve to inform life-course relevant interventions to reduce problem behavior among youth.
