Culture, Ecology and Natural Resource Management: Regional social and environmental change in the Highlands of Thailand

Abstract:

The complexities of cultural and ecological change often make ethnographic studies of regional change extremely difficult. This paper will present an approach to synthesizing ethnographic detail with regional studies of social and environmental change in the rural highlands of Thailand. This approach will bridge regional and local datasets using a complex methodology integrating 40 years of survey and ethnographic data from the Chiang Rai region of northern Thailand. Using a Geographic Information System and Hierarchical Linear Modeling, we will present a methodology to model and conduct spatial analysis of the interactions between local, regional and national level cultural and environmental change. This research is significant in merging contemporary and historic ethnography in a regional context that will contextually ground social issues in a dynamic of sociocultural, land use, and landscape change.
