Performing Identities: Social Relations in a Young Adult Prison

Abstract:

This paper presents findings from an ethnographic study of the construction and negotiation of ethnic and masculine identities in a British young offenders’ correctional institution, considering how these identities bear upon social relations within the prison. Revisiting Sykes’ (1958) indigenous model of prisoner socialisation and adaptation and Jacobs’ (1979) importation model, the observational and interview data point towards the latter's influence, exploring how markers of identity - ethnicity, masculinity, religion, nationality, regionality, and residential locality - are employed in complex ways in the micropolitics of the prison world. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which ethnic identities among white, black, and Asian prisoners, elicit elements of porosity and boundedness, but where the frame of local identification is often superimposed as the boundary mechanism for organising social life within the late modern prison.
