Abstract:

This paper uses the first five waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to examine differences in violence involvement among white and black adolescents. We integrate an individual difference model that emphasizes variation in developed abilities as an explanation of the black-white gap in violence with a social-structural model that highlights the role of neighborhood context. Using the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), results show that blacks evidence lower ASVAB scores and a higher frequency of violence relative to white adolescents. Lower ASVAB scores associate with heightened violence, and the black-white gap in violence is reduced once differences in ASVAB scores are controlled. The black-white gaps in test scores and violence are most evident in advantaged neighborhoods, in which the effect of developed abilities on violence is stronger. Theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.
