Service Utilization Among Domestic Violence Victims: Shelter Services

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

With the emergence of societal awareness regarding domestic violence during the 1960s and early 1970s came the recognition of the need for services to help those individuals escape abusive situations (Riger, Bennett, Wasco, Schewe, Frohmann, Camacho, & Campbell, 2002). Understanding the reasons why domestic violence victims choose to utilize shelters is important for crisis and shelter services alike because doing so would enable these services to better accommodate victims.
The purpose of this exploratory research study is to understand what differences, if any, exist between the domestic violence victims who choose to use shelter services and those who choose not to use them. A sample of 283 domestic violence victim cases were analyzed to determine the variables most likely to influence the decision to use a shelter. Findings include having children, not having an order of protection, and location of the crisis call (not at home) increase the likelihood of using shelter services. Implications for practice and future research are discussed.
