Abstract:
|
Each decade, there seems to be a new focus on certain perpetrators as the cause of most crime problems and most public fear. Since 2001, much of the focus has been on terrorists, but in the 1990s, the focus was on juveniles and gangs. Some cities are again experiencing an upsurge in gang crime. In 1997, we conducted a random digit dial survey of 1000 Orange County, California residents to examine the level and causes of fear of gangs among the public. Prior research has shown that women are much more afraid of crime than men are, so it is important to disaggregate samples and study the causes and consequences of women’s and men’s fears separately. Using descriptive statistics and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) techniques, this paper will compare women’s and men’s perceptions of community disorder and diversity, their levels of perceived risk and fear regarding gang crimes, and the behavioral precautions these groups take to protect themselves from gangs. |
