Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Women’s fear of rape and sexual assault has been both theoretically and empirically linked to their fear of other types of crimes; this phenomenon has been referred to as the shadow of sexual assault hypothesis in past research. The hypothesis has been supported among a national sample of women in the general United States population as well as a national sample of college women in the United States; however, this research has failed to consider victim and offender relationships when measuring fear of crime. The current research extends the understanding of the shadow of sexual assault hypothesis by testing it among college women while considering victim and offender relationships. Using data collected from a sample of randomly selected college students enrolled in a medium-sized public university in the northeast, results from multivariate analyses are presented, policy implications for colleges and universities are discussed, and suggestions for future research are offered.
