Abstract:
|
The victimization of individuals with disabilities began receiving
national attention in 1990 under the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA). The ADA outlined the requirements for the criminal justice
system and for private, non profit victim service providers. More
recently the Violence Against Women Act 2 also included requirements for
providing services to victims with disabilities of all types. This
presentation will review the criminal justice response to the rape of
persons with intellectual disabilities since the passage of ADA,
describe an ecological model of the barriers faced by these victims and
outline the victim service response. The presentation will conclude
with a summary of "future directions" for criminal justice and victim
services obtained from current empirical works. |
