Abstract:

There are about 400 police shootings per year which result in death. Out of this approximate number, 98% of the fatalities are male; 53% fall between the ages of 18 and 30 years old; 56% are white and 42% are black. The number of young black males and young white males is equal at 16%. This paper examines possible antecedents to the shoot/no shoot decision and also examines elements that might cause contagion, or mass reflexive shootings.

The goal of the study is to conduct exploratory research to gain knowledge and insight into the factors that affect police officer shoot/no shoot decision making. If factors are identified that reduce mistakes in the shoot/no shoot decision making process that are transferable to training several negative consequences might be reduced. Obviously accidental deaths as in the Diallo and possibly the Bell incidents might be more frequently avoided. Additionally the severe emotional trauma pain distress and stigmatization that officers
to adjust it could be possible to misperceive an object for a weapon if the adaptation has not fully matured (Correll et al. 2006). A physiological factor (Klinesmith Kasser & McAndrew 2006) that can have a negative effect on reaction time and cognitive ability is physical fatigue and lack of sleep (Horowitz et al. 2003). In aviation there are required crew rest periods and part 121 operations which are the major carriers enjoy some of the lowest accident rates
