Abstract:

Using a triangulated methods approach, this study explored the causes of binge drinking and substance abuse among college students from the college students’ perspective. The data were collected via focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with college students, to examine the causes of binge drinking and substance abuse and determine control and prevention strategies. The results of focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with the students were supplemented with the results of a survey administered to a randomly selected sample of college students in three South Florida colleges. The results revealed that the causes and mechanisms of binge drinking and substance abuse were multi-faceted and complex. These causes could be classified into six categories: system, social, family/parental, educational, individual, and economic factors. Each one of these categories played a significant role in contributing to the final outcome of binge drinking and substance abuse. A significant theme that emerged from the results drew attention to the fact that in order to bring about any change and reduce binge drinking and substance abuse. All sectors of the society – college/university administration, law enforcement system, families, neighborhoods, and parents needed to work together and take greater responsibilities. The results also underscored that educating all parties on the existing resources for students, administrators, and families would prove advantageous in reducing binge drinking and substance abuse.
