Abstract:
|
Numerous studies have found that early onset of sexual activity among adolescents is strongly influenced by peer groups. Furthermore, existing research indicates that females are more susceptible to influence by same-sex peers than are males. The purpose of this research is to examine the influence of opposite-sex peers with regards to sexual activity. This paper focuses specifically on females due to previous findings that females suffer more negative consequences (i.e., pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases) from engaging in sexual activity during adolescence. Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) are used to examine the social networks of females and how the presence of male “best friends” and the proportion of male “friends” influences females' involvement in sexual behaviors. |
