Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: While the consensus of empirical research appears to indicate that after-school programs are, and have been successful in preventing delinquency, studies assessing the impact of particular strategies are rare. The purpose of this research is to assess an after-school program’s effectiveness in preventing delinquency using the social development model (SDM). Specifically, utilizing ethnographic and self-report data of adolescents at a recreation center in Buffalo, N.Y., we analyze whether opportunities for involvement, skills for involvement, and reinforcement of involvement, are correlated with self-reported levels of delinquency. Implications for further future research and public policy are discussed.
