This is one study, among four, designed to identify risk and protective factors for youth violence perpetration. This paper utilizes data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, which includes a nationally representative sample of young people in the United States (n=15,197). Data from Wave 1 (1995, baseline) and Wave 3 (2001) will be analyzed. The key outcome variables will be violence involvement at Wave 3, when youth are aged 18 to 28 (mean=21.96). The main violence outcomes include charges and convictions of assault and robbery, shooting/stabbing someone, and pulling a knife/gun on someone. Key risk and protective factors will be identified from the Wave 1 survey when youth were adolescents (in 7th through 12th grades). Risk and protective factors will include factors at multiple levels of influence including individual, peer, family, and community-levels. These factors will be examined across racial and ethnic groups and by gender, to assess how risk/protection varies by key demographic characteristics. Implications for public health interventions and policy will be discussed. We will also discuss how the findings from this national sample compare to those obtained from the regional datasets examined. |
