Abstract:

Spending time in unstructured group activities and having delinquent peers have been well established as strong correlates of delinquent behavior in the criminology literature. More recent research has focused on the relationship between romantic partnerships and delinquency. The association between romantic relationships with antisocial partners and one’s own delinquency is not well established, although this relationship appears to be positive. In this paper, we have further explored the association between romantic relationships with delinquent partners using data from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), and we have also examined whether this relationship varies by gender and by types of delinquent behavior (i.e. the use of drugs and alcohol, truancy, and violent behavior). We have also explored whether limited parental supervision contributes to the formation of romantic relationships with delinquent partners. Preliminary results indicate that, indeed, the effect of romantic relationships with delinquent partners does vary by type of delinquency, and a limited parental supervision contributes to the formation of romantic relationships with delinquent partners. |
