Hanging out in the Bronx: Crime, Incarceration, and Multi-level Models of Social Networks

Abstract:

The concept of social networks has emerged as a central narrative in the literature on crime and the organization of urban communities. However, only a small number of studies in this area of inquiry have measured actual social exchanges among individuals. Further, very few works have examined the properties of personal networks using a multi-level approach accounting for tie covariates, individual-level predictors and contextual variables. This paper contributes to the literature on neighborhood effects and networks by developing multi-level models of social exchanges based on the analysis of survey data collected in the South Bronx. Specifically, it shows that structural properties of personal networks are significantly associated with contextual characteristics—both in terms of neighborhoods and also in terms of dyadic interactions. More importantly, this research also shows the important network effects of criminal offending, victimization, and incarceration.
