Abstract:
|
A secondary analysis of three data sets revealed that media use not only has independent impact on political knowledge, but also creates joint effects across different programs within a certain type of medium and across different types of media outlets. Network television news use and late night comedy program use were found to have a contributory effect on people’s general political knowledge and issue knowledge; that is, heavy television news viewers learned more from late night comedy programs than light television news users did. By contrast, newspaper and online news use exhibited a negative interaction in predicting knowledge. A similar negative interaction pattern was also suggested between television news and online news uses. However, contrary to expectations, no significant interaction was found between the two traditional news outlets, television and newspaper. This study contributes to understanding the full range of media influences on political knowledge by raising an issue of intra-media interaction. |
