Abstract:

Native Hawaiian students comprise more than 50% of the K-12 student population in public schools in the Leeward district of O'ahu. Less that one-fifth of their teachers are Native Hawaiian. The Ka Lama Education Academy and its support system provide partnership efforts to recruit and prepare teachers from the community to attain qualifications to teach in the schools. This district is plagued by high rates of teacher transience and low student achievement. This effort attempts to build a stable core of teacher from the community to stay and teach in the schools over the long term.
