Abstract:

While scholars have examined the link between emotions and political evaluations, the role of racial group-relevant considerations has yet to be fully delineated. To be sure, psychologists have examined the link between emotional response to racial/ethnic groups and racial attitudes. Still, we do not now how different political events can elicit divergent racial group based emotion response. We begin to fill this void by determining the predictors of racial differences in emotional responses to political events. We argue that political events that highlight and exacerbate racial group differences will yield divergent emotional responses. In what follows, we discuss the extant literature in psychology on group based emotional response to stimuli. Based on this research, we develop a theoretical framework for understanding how racial groups in particular respond to political stimuli. We argue that divergent racial group-based emotional response to a political event is a function of three factors: (1) identification with one’s racial in-group; (2) perceived competition with one’s racial out-group; and (3) a racialized perception of the political event. |
