Abstract:

The overall purpose of this research project is to identify and begin to address problems that exist with regard to contemporary studies of transsexual inmates currently residing in United State’s Federal and State Penitentiaries. This paper will utilize several social psychological perspectives regarding identity theory in order to relate and apply them to transsexual prisoner identity formation and renegotiation within the prison institutional setting.
It is my intention to utilize both classical and contemporary literature regarding gender/sexuality theory as a means to critically evaluate problems relating to controversial policies and procedures associated with the contemporary adjudication of, and housing of individuals identifying as a transsexual sentenced to prison. In so doing, current judicial and prison policies will be examined with attention given to how they affect the individual identity and agency of individuals within a total institutional setting. Lastly, this project will highlight the need for public policy reform regarding the treatment by which this population is currently subjected to while residing in U.S. prisons.
