"It's Like that Dirty Little Secret No One Wants To Talk About": Negotiating Money, Meaning, and Risk in the Surrogate Experience

Abstract:

In this paper I examine the process of how paid surrogate mothers come to understand the financial, emotional and physical value of their work. Through in-depth interviews with experienced surrogates I show how the embodied experience of physical risk via third party reproduction changes the way surrogates value their labor time. Secondly, this paper demonstrates how contracts, while holding the potential to protect surrogates, in practice, often fall short of sparing the surrogate from physical, emotional and financial harm. Experienced surrogates (those performing more than one pregnancy) demonstrate how they reconciled the desire to perform an altruistic act for a couple they sympathize with, while asking for higher fees and more control over their labor process. The paper concludes with suggestions on how to protect women who choose to work as surrogate mothers.
