Abstract:

Gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth often face stigmatization, harassment, and even psychological and physical abuse at home, at school, and in society at large, and these experiences can have disastrous effects on their well being and opportunities for future success. Previous research has demonstrated that these youth report greater levels of depression and more school-related problems as well, including a weaker sense of attachment and belonging to school and more trouble with teachers and peers. As psychological distress and attachment and engagement to school have been linked to educational success it is likely that sexual minority adolescents suffer in academic terms as well. Existing data have not allowed researchers to fully examine how sexual minority youth fare in school, but newly collected data from the Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement (AHAA) study provides the first opportunity to explore whether GLB youth enter adulthood with an educational disadvantage. In this study, we examine (1) whether sexual minority youth have lower levels of academic success, (2) if their lower educational performance is explained by depression, school attachment, and trouble at school and (3) whether these relationships differ for boys and girls. Overall, results suggest that sexual minority youth do suffer academically, and that this is in part a result of their increased psychological distress and school-related problems. Additionally, the impact of same-sex romantic attraction on educational outcomes and psychological distress differs for boys and girls.
