Abstract:
|
Why are some voluntary associations effective at engaging participants, developing their leaders, and advancing their public agendas while others remain ineffective? This paper reports preliminary findings from a study investigating this question by examining local Sierra Club organizations. Here, we introduce an analytic framework for examining effectiveness of member-based advocacy organizations and present systematic evidence from two recently collected surveys of group chairs and elected leaders of the Sierra Club’s 343 local groups. We conceptualize organizational effectiveness in terms of leader development, member engagement and public influence, and we examine how these dimensions are related to one another. We demonstrate the viability and value of this approach to examining organizational effectiveness, and we highlight the core explanatory puzzles that will be addressed in our ongoing analyses. |
