Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: Sociology is inherently interdisciplinary and sociologists play a pivotal role in connecting different approaches to learning. This paper describes two attempts to link sociology courses with other disciplines at a Historically Black Institution while confronting the passive student/classroom. Students in a social psychology class were challenged with an emotive-collaborative approach that utilized teacher as text, guest speakers, archival research, and a field trip. The next effort was a learning community that linked a victimology class with a political science course around the theme of civil liberties. The learning community also highlighted guest speakers in addition to a group debate. The strong and weak points of these interdisciplinary approaches are discussed with comments about future attempts to demonstrate the vitality and breath of sociology in intersecting other disciplines.
