Abstract:

Truth, power, and the experience of power has been obscured by nascent disciplinary perspectives focusing on peace and justice. Specifically, theories of “transitional justice” and “transitional peace” have been wedded to moral cosmology that are predicated on narrowly formulated conceptions of human nature, social order, and ethics. They are generally mistaken on non-Western principles of truth telling, modes of inquiry, and ethical concerns. This proposal is a challenge to the generalized disciplinary skepticism that Africa can be expected to function like Europe or the West in providing universalizable norms and values. It looks at a few global events through perspectives derived from select African perspectives on truth and its relations to peace and justice. The paper is based on the assumptions that, based on its etymology and perspectives, the goals of a discipline of international relations may be the following: a) to capture international reality, knowledge, and the various modes of thought that capture and shape them; b) to advance social justice and human security and the methods for attaining them; and c) to restore agency and ethical perspectives to past and present historical processes.
