Abstract:

This paper discusses the instrument used to investigate sixth-grade students’ perceptions of caring teacher behaviors. This research utilized a researcher-created instrument that measured three types of caring teacher behaviors. While the instrument was used successfully in some respects, there were particular issues that arose based on questions of racial identity. While this instrument is an important step in operationalizing complex identity questions, especially at a sixth-grade level, it is clear that this instrument did not go far enough in finding a way to measure these concepts effectively in an age-appropriate manner. Further revisions of the instrument are needed to continue to move toward a way to better measure students’ identity. |
