Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: This paper contributes to the conceptualization and measurement of individual-level identity by proposing a latent variable model of individuals' strength of identification with the state in which they live and their ethno-national group using data from an original survey administered to the students of 21 secondary schools in 12 towns in Bosnia- Herzegovina (N=2,989) and Croatia (N=1,468). The paper proposes two important improvements to survey-based identity measurement. First, the paper argues that a latent-variable approach is best suited to measure this kind of abstract, unobservable concept. Second, the paper contends that in contexts where individuals identify with multiple social entities, it is important to measure the strength of each identity separately. Parallel measurement models for the strength of students' identification with the state and with their ethno-national group are developed and compared to commonly-used, single-indicator measures in a series of construct validation tests. These tests suggest that the latent variable measures are vastly superior to the single indicator measures.
