Abstract:

In this paper the findings are presented from an empirical study on the therapeutic and anti-therapeutic effects of the criminal justice system on crime victims. The study examines victims’ experiences within the traditional criminal justice system, their perceptions of fairness and how these factors affect their recovery from the crime. Victim recovery was assessed based on victims’ Post-traumatic stress symptoms and their self-esteem. Interviews were conducted at two different times with crime victims whose cases were handled by the Quebec courts in 2004. The paper closes with recommendations on how policy-makers and practitioners can enhance the therapeutic effects of the criminal justice process and reduce the risk of secondary victimization.
