Abstract:

It is estimated that one in seven school-aged children are either a bully or a victim of bullying. Children who are victims of bullying suffer psychological and social consequences such as low self-esteem, insecurity, trouble-making friends, and are fearful of attending school. Moreover, being bullied in childhood can lead to adjustment problems in adulthood. In addition, there is evidence to suggest that victims of bullying are more likely to be victims of crime, including larceny-theft, assault and other violent offenses. Using the 2001 National Crime Victimization Survey School Crime Supplement, this study explores the effectiveness of Opportunity Theory in explaining bullying victimization while controlling for student characteristics. Preliminary results suggest that measures of target vulnerability, exposure and proximity and guardianship are statistically significant predictors of being bullied. |
