Abstract:

College provides a context for experimentation with alcohol and drugs, and the consequences of this behavior range from mild to severe. The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of substance use and the consequences of misuse among college students. The Shortened Inventory of Drug Use Consequences was used to assess negative consequences associated with substance use; this study represents one of the first attempts to apply this instrument to a non-clinical population. Reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analytic procedures showed this measure to have high internal consistency and validity. A random sample of participants (N = 432) was drawn from a medium-sized state university in the southeastern United States. Subjects were asked to report patterns of use for alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine over the past 30 days, as well as the past year. Multiple linear regression was used to predict the negative consequences of drug use vis-à-vis the use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and cocaine. |
